How the live Tube map works

Where the trains come from

TfL does not publish where its trains are. It publishes when each train is expected at each station. Tube-Map Live! reads those predictions for the whole network every few seconds, works out which stretch of track each train must be on, and moves it along the real shape of the line between stations, accelerating away and braking in as a train does.

How accurate it is

A train's position is worked out from its predicted arrivals, not from GPS, so it is right to the section of track rather than to the metre. On a recorded evening of the live feed, trains reached each station within a median of 14 seconds of TfL's own final prediction. Where TfL has not reported a stop behind a train, its position is estimated from its next arrival, and the map says so.

Why the DLR has no trains

TfL's live feed for the Docklands Light Railway does not say which train is which, so there is no way to follow an individual DLR train. The DLR's track and stations are shown.
